Sound Portraits, Sound Installation
2023, LT4K, Cologne/Germany
The concept of accurately describing the reality we see in a person is a complex subject. Our perception of others is shaped by our individual perspectives, biases, and experiences, which can make it challenging to capture an all-encompassing understanding of someone's true essence. "Sound portraits" project seeks to explore a way to convey individuals' realities through sound. By inviting people to describe themselves through sound, the project taps into a realm beyond traditional visual representations. Participants are encouraged to delve into their inner worlds and express their identities in a raw and unfiltered manner. The freedom to use any sound, whether it's a word, a song, or even unconventional sounds like screaming or hissing, empowers individuals to communicate their emotions, memories, and unique qualities that might not be easily expressed through words alone. These sounds used for the installation. As the project progresses, the artist acts as a conduit, interpreting and transforming the recorded sounds into "sound portraits" that reflect the artist's perception of the participants. By placing the sound portraits behind glass on a black plain paper, within a white frame on a white wall, the focus remains on the auditory aspect, allowing visitors to engage with the soundscapes. The use of headphones for listening practice isolates the sounds, creating an environment for participants to immerse themselves in the sonic narratives.
