“Tears As Instrument”
2023, Research/Instrument

The project focuses on emotional expression and theatrical/dramatic approach in digital music instruments and performances. The research aims to examine the concept of gestures and their meaning on stage, as well as explore the expressive potential they hold for experiences. The project specifically focuses on the development of a time controller device triggered by tears, aiming to investigate the relationship betwee emotional expression and the instrument. This control device enables temporal and spatial manipulation of sound samples derived from make noise tape and micro sound unit, contributing to the creation of compositions. Incorporating tears as gestures in musical performance represents a profound exploration of emotional expression and vulnerability. This conceptual framework challenges traditional norms and pushes the boundaries of musical expression. Through this project, tears become more than mere symbols of sadness or joy; they transform into gestures that shape the sonic landscape and invite audiences into a space of deep empathy and connection. The performers' willingness to openly weep on stage creates a powerful and transformative experience, breaking down barriers between performer and audience. This integration of tears as gestures in the Digital Musical Instrument (DMI) expands the possibilities of musical performance, allowing for a direct and viscera connection between emotions and the resulting music. By pushing the boundaries of emotional expression in musical performance, the concept of gesture in the relationship between the performance, the stage and the listener and the place in the instrument are questioned.
